Rockridge Real Estate
In the late 1800's, the area now known as Rockridge was mostly scattered with farms and farmhouses. By the late 1800's there were many Italian immigrants moving into the West side of College Avenue, and many residents sold produce that they grew in their own gardens. In the years between 1890 and 1910, the population of Oakland tripled from around 50,000 to 150,000. By 1920, the population had reached 215,000, and the development that came along with the population infusion helped to support what is now an exclusive area of Oakland. Just as they did for the rest of the country, electric street railways were changing the face of transportation by the 1890's.
Starting in 1905, College Avenue had it's own street car that could get people to downtown Oakland and Berkeley. These days, the street cars have been replaced with Bart, which is a big reason why Rockridge is such a desirable area to live in for people who want to be close to mass transportation while living in an exclusive area. The area surrounding College Avenue is known as Lower Rockridge, and the area above Highway 13 is Upper Rockridge.
Today, College Avenue is known for it's upscale restaurants, popular deli's and coffee shops as well as boutiques and specialty stores. During the day it's a bustling retail sector with a lot of foot traffic. Lower Rockridge has one of the best walkscore's of anywhere in the City. This is because it's flat, and has such an impressive amount of shopping and dining opportunities while also being close to Bart. For this reason, Rockridge has just about the highest price per sqauare foot of any area in the City.
