For many years, this City has been described as one of California's most upscale and desirable communities. It's no wonder that it actually began as a resort back in the late 1800's. For years, professional elites from San Francisco sought out this City for it's amazing beauty and wonderful climate. Blair Park and Piedmont Park were destinations for those who wanted to relax, unwind and enjoy the natural springs, mild weather and beautiful scenery. By the late 19th century, the construction of large estates had increaced and by the early 20th century, the population had grown enough for it to be incorporated as a City. This is when development increased, and today it's truly a gem among California Cities.
Piedmont homes were designed in such a way that they seem to blend in with the surrounding greenery. Most of the homes were built in the early to mid 1900's, and the architectual styles range from large Craftsman Bungalows, to very unique and expansive revival period homes, Colonial, and Mediterranean. The large size of many homes there makes it a very low density area, which gives the area a very residential feel. Just like parts of Oakland and San Francisco, the neighborhoods were designed with Nature in mind. The idea was to make the homes blend in with the Native Trees and Plans, so as to create a feeling of peace and serenity. In addition, the the City only has one small retail center, but the bustling Piedmont Avenue retail section is located just West of the City in Oakland. I doubt you will ever see a Wal Mart or any other large chain type store there, it just isn't that type of place. If they tried I'm sure there would be fierce opposition from the residents.
The School District in Piedmont is among the best in the State, which is one of the main attractions for families who don't want to pay for private school.
