Temescal Homes
At the heart of north Oakland lies the community of Temescal, which is an urban section of Oakland that is very diverse in terms of the people who live there. Many artists, students and families have been attracted to temescal for years. The history of this Oakland neighborhood goes way back to the late 18th century. Vicente Peralta owned land there which was subdivided in the 1860's when industry was booming. Between the 1880's and 1920's, European immigrants flooded into the area. Many of them were Italians, which is why Temescal was known as Oakland's "Little Italy" until the 70's. The architecture of Temescal real estate inlcudes Victorian, Neo-Colonial and Craftsman Bungalows. There is a somewhat high density, with apartment building's along the main streets. The main retail areas of Temescal are Broadway and Telegraph ave, although College ave and Piedmont ave are in close proximity.
