Housing needs during wartime increaced, and therefore the Laurel district expanded. What was formerly Hopkins street was renamed Macarthur Boulevard in honor of WWII hero Douglas Macarthur. Business in the area was spurred by the opening of the 38th avenue streetcar line, and by the 1920's there were hardware stores, drug stores, restaraunts and other businesses established. The architecture of Laurel consists mostly of crafstman and bungalow homes, some with large lots.
