Lake Merritt is one of Oakland's Crown Jewels, and therefore Lake Merritt real estate is some of the most desirable in the City. Both it's beauty and historical significance are the main reasons for Lake Merritt's popularity. The Lake has the distinction of being the first wildlife refuge in the Country, thanks to former Oakland Mayor Samuel Merritt. Lake Merritt was originally a marsh, which is why it is still home to several bird species which use it as a natural migration point.
The Grand Lake Theater is the prominent landmark of this area, as well as the famous Rose Garden. Lakeshore avenue is one of Oakland's busiest retail sectors with restaurants, coffee shops, clothing and specialty stores. Peet's Coffee, Arizmende Bakery, Trader Joes, Starbucks, Flavors of India and Top Dog are just a few of the establishments that line Lakeshore avenue.
While in the old days Lake Merritt real estate consisted of mostly single family residences, recent years have seen condominium conversions and construction on the rise. You have probaby noticed some significant changes over that past several years such as the addition of Lake Chalet, and the ongoing project to create access from the Oakland Estuary to the Lake. Soon, small sailboats will be able to leave the lake and navigate the Estuary, and vice versa. New landscaping, walkways and recreational areas are currently being finished as the project comes closer to completion. In addition, Cleveland Cascade (a waterfall that used to run down the middle of the stairs that go from Lakeshore up to Cleveland street) is being rehabilitated and will hopefully be functioning again soon.
