Broadway Terrace Homes
Located east of Temescal is Broadway Terrace, which could be considered the beginning of the Oakland hills. This area has sort of a small town feel, beacuse it's self contained and has vibrant retail section along Piedmont ave. There are high quality restaraunts, coffee shops, a movie theatre, several boutiques and specialty stores.
Along with Kaiser Permanente, Piedmont ave is one of the most defining features of the area, and it attracts many throughout the day. This area was developed later than most of the other areas in North Oakland, so most of it remained as estates into the 1900's. One of the biggest reasons for the growth of Broadway Heights real estate was the horse-drawn streetcar of the 1870's which carried people to the Mountain View Cemetary. Even though much of the growth of Broadway Heights occured between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the developement didnt end until the 1960's.
The architecture of Broadway Heights homes varies from Craftsman Bungalows to Neo-Colonial to Victorian and suburban style ranch homes. By the 1960's-70's, there were apartment buildings and condominiums built in the neighborhood's southeast. The Mountain View Cemetary and others are still located north of this Oakland neighborhood.
